On average, six to seven farmers are killed every year in New Zealand, when using farm tractors. ![]() They will help you comply with the Health and Safety in Employment Act 1992 (the HSE Act). WorkSafe NZ accepts these recommendations as current industry best practice. This guideline outlines potential hazards of using tractors on farms, and provides recommendations to eliminate, isolate and minimise those hazards. This publication provides practical guidance for using tractors safely on farms. Ensure PTO shafts and connections are guarded and keep clear when it is engaged.Do not carry passengers on tractors that do not have instructor seats, ROPS, and safety belts.Always wear a seatbelt if the tractor has a Roll-Over Protective Structure (ROPS).Operators must be trained/experienced enough to do the job.This guidance will be progressively reviewed and either updated, replaced with other guidance, or revoked. Please read this guidance in conjunction with all relevant industry standards that apply to you as a PCBU. While this guidance has not been updated to reflect current work health and safety legislation (the Health and Safety at Work Act 2015 and regulations), it may still contain relevant information and practices to keep workers and others healthy and safe.
